Changhee Chun
Ever since I saw the effect of films on an audience, I have been intrigued by filmmaking. Despite the odds, I was accepted to film school in Korea during a time when studying the arts was not encouraged by many. After graduating from Hanyang University in Seoul, I quickly began searching for work, eagerly. I established myself with some freelance production companies, and eventually was chosen for to be a producer at several major broadcasting stations in Korea. I produced over thirty television commercials, television documentaries and also produced the Korean broadcasting of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Broadcasting was not a bad job, but it was not the place where I could truly explore my philosophy for filmmaking and expand my visual language. A few years of this career path went by, and I was ready for my next challenge. I came to the U.S. for graduate school at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (UNC-G). I quickly fell in love with southern tea (and was quite appalled at what they call iced tea in the northern states). I began serious consideration for my film style and techniques. The result of this process is my first feature-length narrative, Creation (2003, 16mm & DV, 110 min., B/W & Color).
Creation went on to CINESTUD in Amsterdam, Holland, the St. Louis International Film Festival, Blue Sky International Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, the Film Fan Awards in Richmond, VA, the Rochester International Film Festival and the James River Festival of Moving Images. It was also featured on the season premiere of “North Carolina Visions” at the PBS in North Carolina.
During my last year of graduate school, I was simultaneously hired as a professor of cinema production. From there, I began my next challenge to inspire and motivate younger filmmakers, and continued on to Ithaca College where I am currently an assistant professor of cinema production. Across the Sky is the focus of my production right now, but I also keep busy with my students, school and community projects.
My life philosophy: The privilege to create a valuable film is granted only to those who can succeed in the challenge; I accept this challenge with creative enthusiasm.
