Episode 1: Lost Baggage

Ithaca, NY - The Ithaca College Department of Cinema, Photography, and Media Arts (CPMA) proudly presents a special screening of Lost Baggage, the first episode of the documentary series, Across the Sky and a special extended trailer of Honoring Home, the second episode of the series. Professor Changhee Chun, director/producer of over 30 major television commercials, fiction films, and award-winning documentaries, collaborated with students, interns, and alums for a semester in his course, Advanced Cinema Production: Experience in Documentary Filmmaking, to produce the first two episodes of the series.

Lost Baggage, the first episode, deals with the lives and struggles of immigrants in South Korea. Up until the 1990s, there were very few “foreigners” living or immigrating to South Korea. Since the early 1990s, there has been an enormous influx of migrant workers—mainly recruited from South or Southeast Asia—to fill the employment demands needed in the “3D” (dirty, dangerous and difficult) sector. Members of this group experience much of the discrimination that exists in the rest of Korean society, such as social class prejudices, but also endure abuse and social discrimination that is instigated by rhetoric of a “homogeneous” Korean family, which is still heavily prevalent in Korean society today.
